USS Midway History
The "Midway Magic" tour is named because of the remarkable history of the U.S.S. Midway. The 47 year operating career of the U.S.S. Midway makes it the longest service of any aircraft carrier in the history of the United States. With it being commissioned in 1945 during WWII and then serving as the flagship in Desert Storm in 1991, the USS Midway is a marvel in longevity. Many carriers would break down and had to head back to port for repairs while the USS Midway and its crew remained stationed and was ready for any military or humanitarian call. The 225,000 crew members aboard the USS Midway over its long history were involved with surrender of Japan in WWII, the Cold War, Vietnam, the era of détente and Desert Storm.
